Why Does My Neck Hurt?

Neck pain is a common complaint. In fact, nearly everyone will face this type of pain at some point in their life. For some it comes as a result of an accident, such as a fall or car accident. This type of pain can resolve as the injury heals or it can lead to chronic pain.

Others deal with ongoing neck pain that is the byproduct of a degenerative disease process. Some of the most common disc-related reasons of neck pain includes disc herniation or bulging discs, osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, fractures, or dislocations.

No matter the source, coping with neck pain is never fun, but would you be surprised to find out that many people unknowingly make their pain worse? If you face chronic neck pain and can’t find the source or find relief, you might be contributing to the issue through these actions:

  1. Desk position – Many people spend much time at their desk, typing and looking at their screen. If your keyboard and monitor are not in an optimal position, however, this type of prolonged activity can lead to chronic neck pain. You can resolve this by ensuring that your shoulders, arms, and head remain in a neutral position as you type. Take frequent breaks as well to reduce the build up of muscle tension.

  1. Phone activity – Smartphones have invaded our lives and taken over nearly every minute of our free time. This means people spend significant portions of time hunched over, staring down at their phones. This position, especially when it’s held for long periods of time, can lead to chronic neck, shoulder, and upper back pain. If you’re suffering from frequent pain that’s unrelated to an injury or disease, this might be to blame.

  1. Sleeping position – Most people spend six to eight hours a night in their bed every night. So, if you’re dealing with neck pain that you can’t find the source of, it might be due to your mattress, pillow, or sleeping position. This is especially true if you wake up with headaches or pain and muscle stiffness in your neck, shoulders, and upper back.
