Chronic back pain and symptoms related to back issues can cause extreme discomfort, mobility issues and a poor quality of life. Chiropractic care is often an ideal solution to help alleviate these issues. However, if treatments fail to provide the appropriate level of relief, you might want to consider adding spinal decompression therapy.
Non-surgical spinal decompressing involves a motorized form of traction that has been shown to reduce or relieve back pain and improve other related issues. The therapy works by gently stretching the spinal region. The goal of the treatment is to change the position of the spine and take pressure off the spinal discs. These gel-like cushions between the spinal vertebrae (or bones of the spine) can become compressed creating great discomfort. Decompression therapy creates negative pressure that can cause bulging or herniated discs to retract. This removes the pressure on the spine and helps to promote healing. Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy can be used to treat the following conditions:
- Back or neck pain
- Sciatica symptoms including weakness or tingling that travels down the legs
- Bulging discs
- Degenerative disc disease
- Posterior facet syndrome (Worn spinal joints)
- Injured spinal nerve roots
The decompression therapy treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. It is conducted in the doctor’s office with the patient fully clothed. The patient lays on a computerized table either face up or face down. They are fitted with a harness around their pelvis and trunk. The harnesses work to gently pull the spine in opposite directions. The treatment specifics can be customized via computer to meet the medical needs of the patient. Several repeat visits over the course of several weeks are often required to complete the therapy. Other medical procedures might be combined with the treatment to increase the efficacy.
If you are pregnant or are suffering from a bone fracture, tumor, abdominal aortic aneurysm, severe osteoporosis or have metal spinal implants, you should not undergo this type of spinal therapy.
